Our pick of the best music festivals in the world

We believe that your never to old to go to a music festivals anywhere in the world.  Its so much more than just a festival.

Its everything from the music, the outfits, the atmosphere, the food, the people, the places, the whole vibe.  I guess it all started for us when we met at a music festival called Steriosonic back in Perth 2012.  Since then we have been to many music festivals within Australia and all over the world.  Including EDC, Tomorrowland, HolyShip, Ultra Music Bali, Coachella and Burningman and still continue to enjoy going to different festivals all over the world.

Here we will list our favourite music festivals and also give a rating for you along with some pros and cons.

Our favourite Music festivals.

EDC

Electric Daisy carnival  is one of the biggest electronic dance music festivals in the world.  Held annually at Las Vegas speedway, it goes for 3 nights during the months of May or June.  Tickets are easy to get online you can sign up to the website where you can buy tickets and also hotel packages . We got the hotel package which included, 3 nights accommodation, tickets to the venue and transfers .  It is a far drive from the strip so taxis can be expensive if you don’t have hotel transfers organised plus theres a thousands of people all wanting to leave at the same time.  When EDC week is on, Vegas is even busier than usual.  In fact EDC week is the busiest week of the year.  Theres day pool parties, night pool parties and also some DJs play at popular clubs  through the week.  I would recommend pre booking tickets if you want to go to these as they do book out and the prices do go up.  What I loved about EDC apart from the neon lights, the moving art cars, the candy bracelets and the colourful  outfits, was the love.  There was such a happy buzz, everyone was so friendly.

Good: Festival is at night so temperatures are cooler, well organised, good venue.

Bad: Location is far from the Vegas strip. Long wait for buses back to hotels. Not for you if you don’t like EDM!

Tomorrowland

Another one of the largest electronic dance music festivals in the world held in Boom, Belgium.  House, EDM, Techno, Drum and Bass, hardstyle, it is represented by world-wide superstars.  A 3 day festival It now stretches over 2 weekends and usually sells out quickly.  There were 3 of us all online on separate computers trying to get tickets at 1am in the morning. When we did it in 2013 it was held on one weekend only so you had to be ready waiting on your computer to get them.  We were so happy when were able to get our tickets, the only package left was DreamVille, the camping package which included your tent already put up for you and 4 nights. The festival transforms Belgium’s country side into a magical world, with the most incredible attention to detail.  The effort put into the mind-blowing stages , the fireworks and even the staff get dressed up and some you will find walking around on stilts.  Staying at Dreamville was convenient in the way that you didn’t have to get transfers, you could just walk 5 minutes to the festival, the bad thing was that it did rain on the last day and the tent site was so muddy. We had to wear plastic bags over our feet to walk to the public showers.  We were smart and  brought a lot of face wipes so we could clean our bodies before got into the tent.

Good: Unites people from all over the world. very well organised. huge venue with multiple stages. Option to camp or hotel stay. Food from all over the world.

Bad: For us it rained so weather can be unpredictable.

HolyShip!

An annual electronic dance music festival held aboard a 4,000+ capacity cruise ship, leaving Port Canaveral Miami with stops to the Bahamas. This was the first ever festival we had done on a ship. You have 4 nights on the ship also making a stop on a  private island for a day beach party and then either spending a day at sea or stopping Nassau, Bahamas prior to arriving back in Miami. We went with about 10 other friends, we all had our own cabins on different levels.  Max and myself paid extra for a really good cabin were we had a balcony and a small dining area, which was enough to fit all our friends in for pre drinks. We were directly one level below the top deck so the whole room vibrated when a DJ was playing on the stage.  The ship was immaculate, a floating 5 Star hotel.  We loved how you didn’t have to travel far to get back to your room, and that you could shower anytime you wanted to. The buffet was all you can eat 24/7 we have never had so much pizza in our life haha.  The stages were spread throughout the ship.  One was in a huge theatre room and others were on the top deck next to the pools. There were room parties everywhere you walked and also elevator parties.  What we loved is that some nights they had a theme. One night was Noah’s Arks theme were we wore matching Fox outfits. The second night was Mardi Gras we were prepared as we drove through New Orleans at the same time Mardi Gras was on.  We already had bags full of beads.  It was  the first year that the weather was bad and the canceled the private island party which was one of the main reasons we wanted to go.  It happened the same year after. We still got to stop at Nassau.

Good: All you can eat buffet. Everything you needed was on board. No transport required

Bad : The unpredictable weather. cancellation of the island party.

Coachella

Americas best Music and Arts Festival held in Palm Springs Indio, California.  Held over 3 days in April It features musical artists from many genres of music, including rock, indie, hiphop and electronic dance music. Also art installations and sculptures, which makes it one of a kind.  I loved the fashion at Coachella, think Boho style mixed with glitter, body tattoos, tassels, boots and mesh clothing. Theres many things to love about Coachella, the different artist’s and music, the huge ferris wheel and the art structures located all throughout the venue.

We got a hotel package with the tickets and stayed at Mission Valley resort Palm Springs.  The shuttle busses  would pick you up every hour and you always had a spot, we had no hassle with transport.  Theres a laid back, chilled vibe of Coachella, you can watch someone and then go get a drink  sit on the grass and then walk around to another stage. It gets hot through the day, we didn’t end up going in until after 2.  We went to a pool party at the Hilton Hotel where Skrillex played.  This was mine and also my girlfriends first time at Coachella and Max’s third, and i understand why he would go more than once.  Coachella brings in some huge headliners with surprise acts every day.  When we were there the surprise guest acts were Drake and Skrillex.

It also brings in famous people, including musicians and actors.  Don’t be surprised if your standing next to Vanessa Hudgens or a Victoria Secret Model.  One bad thing that happened to us was Max had his wallet pinched from his pocket.  We heard that a guys stole over 100 mobile phones but he got caught. YAY

Good: All genres of music, different food, nice lush venue. Awesome sound. Great speakers. Spread out. Buses to and from every hour.

Bad: Beyoncé had to cancel due to twins. Could only drink alcohol in designated areas. Extremely hot weather conditions.Pick pocketers. No profession cameras such as DSLR are allowed in.

Burning Man

Wow this one would by far be our favourite.  Every year held on the Black Rock Desert the event is described as an experiment in community and art.  It explores various forms of artistic self-expression, experimental and interactive sculpture, performances and art cars.  It’s not just a place to camp out, get naked, do drugs, and take selfies with strangely dressed celebrities ( Although We did see Paris Hilton).  Around about 70,000 people attend and every year that number increases.

Theres no bins or shops on the desert and everyone is expected to take everything you brought in, back out again. The “Leave No Trace” is Burning mans top principel.  You have to bring all your water, food and booze.  It’s all camping and most people come in Rv’s or vans.  Our group had our own Rv with air-con as well as our own shower, toilet and kitchen. The area is set out like a horse shoe clock, the outer side is all camping and the middle is the ‘playa” where most of the art cars and stages are distributed. The playa is huge you can get across on foot but many people ride bikes as it is vastly spread out.  Bikes are covered in faux fur and fake flowers by day and at night come alive with LED coloured flashing lights.  You want your bike to stand out so you can find it buried in with the other thousands of bikes.  Be sure to lock your bike too, we always locked our bikes together and the one time we didn’t it got stolen from right behind us.  If you’re not sure on outfits just remember that less is more.  You won’t find many people wearing much clothing, most girls only wear just undies, bralettes or nipples covers.  At night it gets cold so a long faux fur coat in a necessity.  Bring 2 water bottles, one for water and one for the bars that make their own cocktails.   We found bars that served warm coffee martinis, different ciders and my favourite frozen berry margaritas.  We loved riding to different bars and pulling in for a drink and making new friends.  Because its super hot through the day,  we found it was better to nap or chill out through the day and then party and explore at night as the colours from all the lights look better.  Watching the sunrise in the morning was amazing. We went roller-skating one night, another night we found a swing.

The Saturday night is when they burn the man, even when you are hundreds of  meters away you can still feel the fire on your skin.  Everyone on the playa gathers around cheering, its more of a happy vibe.

Burningman festival

On the last night is when they burn the Temple.  Its completely silent when they do it.  through the day the temple is silent, the only noise is from people meditating and the sniffling from people holding back tears.  Its is a very spiritual place where burners come and leave notes, letters and even the ashes of loved ones inside in preparation for the burn under a crescent moon.

Honestly there are no words that can describe our experience at Burning man.  It’s such a giving and caring community where people have the freedom to express who ever they are without any judgement, hate or racism. A must do experience.  We can’t wait to go again.

Good: The atmosphere. No phone reception. The trading of gifts. Costumes. This festival never sleeps, it runs all day all night.

Bad: The state of the public toilets. The heat through the day. Hard to get tickets. No shops on site so you must come prepared. No Drones unless you have a permit which is very hard to get.
